The Parkway is Closing

  • Mar. 19th, 2009 at 7:46 AM
That is so many kinds of wrong!
I'm stunned.

This coming Sunday, 3/22/09, will be the LAST DAY OF OPERATIONS for the Parkway Speakeasy Theater.

I absolutely don't know what to say.

The Cerrito will continue doing its thang, but the Cerrito isn't 5 blocks from Team LexiMonkey HQ (though it is convenient to the El Cerrito BART station).

No more Beer & Pizza with my movie within walking distance from home.

Previously in O,DIKTO?:

-Tales From Thrillville: Monstrous Valentine's Show (King Kong vs. Godzilla, and one of my best TFTs)

-Tales From Thrillville: Mad Mexican Monster Mash (Night of the Bloody Apes)

-Tales From Thrillville: 9th Anniversary Bash! (Forbidden Planet)

-Tales from Thrillville: "The Hipster Holocaust Blow-Out", baby! (Panic in Year Zero)

-Tales from Thrillville: The "Horror-Host-a-Palooza '05" Write Up! (at long last) (Dracula vs. Frankenstein/Astro-Zombies science-fiction double feature)

Thrillville Monkey
Alright, hepcats, -kittens, and -kaiju. Last Thursday 2/8 was Thrillville's Monstrous Valentine's Show. And your humble scribe was there to drink and ogle the hotties take in the festivities and record all most lots of it for the thrill-seekers who couldn't be there.

Make with the clickety-click, thrill-seeker. And bring a snack, this is a long one with peekchoors. )

Thrillville in El Cerrito, THIS THURSDAY

  • Feb. 7th, 2007 at 10:22 AM
Thrillville Monkey
OK thrill-seekers, it's that time again! This Thursday is Thrillville and PIRATE HAS THE THURSDAY NIGHT OFF!!!

BOO-YAA!

For far too long have the monkey's employment obligations kept him from chronicling the swankitude and B-movie mania that are to be found in his Tales from Thrillville. But he would not miss this one for ANYTHING.

Why?

Because in honor of Valentines Day, Your hosts Will the Thrill and Monica, Tiki Goddess* present that classic tale of repressed love, King Kong vs. Godzilla YESSSS! One of the staples of the annual Thanksgiving Day kaiju movie marathon of my youth. AWESOME!

Want more? How about LIVE KAIJU BATTLES ON STAGE starring Gorilla-X, Gorilla to the Stars! [Go Monkey! Go monkey! Go monkey! Go!] (As well as some as yet unidentified dude in a big lizard suit.)

Still not enough for you? Well strap in for the jet to Vegas, baby! Live on stage, The Atomic Lounge Show starring Ginger and Johnny Atomic! YESSS! These swingin' cats played last year's "Thrillville Hipster Holocaust Blow-Out". Don't miss it!

This time out, Thrillville will be appearing at the newly renovated Cerrito Speakeasy Theater in El Cerrito, about a block from the El Cerrito BART station.

$8 gets you in, 21+ because they serve beer & wine along with the food. Show starts at 9pm, but get there early because Will always has cool, weird shit on the screen in the hour leading up.

And be sure to hunt down your humble scribe and say hi. Just look for the shockingly handsome bloke in the points

See you there! And if not, keep checking this space for the latest Tale from Thrillville by (hopefully) Sunday.

* I have it on good authority that her Divine Tikiness will not be there for the beginning of the night as she's in a play and has a performance that night. But she should join us for the wrap-up.

Happy "Fuck Off, Puritans!" Day*

Pirate Monkey
It's another FOPD and you know what that means for the monkey... KAIJU FLIX!!!!! Or, as they more mundanely known, "Giant Monster Movies". Why, you newer readers may be asking yourself, does the monkey watch Godzilla movies on "It's All Downhill for the First Nations People From Here" day? One word: Tradition.

On tap?

20 Million Miles to Earth: The master of stop-motion, Ray Harryhausen, at work. Love it. Maybe not stricktly what people think of as Kaiju (i.e. men in rubber suits), but it's got a giant monster. And I used to love it as a kid, so there.

Rodan: Some people think of the dolphin-eating master of the skies as an also-ran in the hierarchy of monsters. Me, I worship all things giant, rubbery, and destructive.

King Kong va. Godzilla: BEST! KAIJU! MOVIE! EVAR!!! And not just because it's got a big monkey (that's just bonus points). Also, the subject of what may be my magnum opus, Tales From Thrillville: Monstrous Valentine's Show.

Okay, Lexi's summoning me to be dishes monkey while she makes with the cookity-cook.

Happy FOPD, everyone.

Pirate Monkey
Okay primates, it's been TOO MONY MONTHS that work has interfered with your humble scribes duties chronicling the hipness, wonder, and swankitude that is Thrillville. Basically, I've been working Thursday nights.

Foo.

BUT...

Being currently relieved from the incessant demands of regular employment (and with current prospects holding out the possibility of Thursday nights at liberty), the monkey is gearing up for 10/19/06, when Will the Thrill and Monica, Tiki Goddess, present THRILLVILLE'S MONSTER-RAMA!:
Featuring TWO internationally acclaimed (by a certain small but critical segment of the world population) horror classics: terror film icon Paul Naschy gets it on with sexy blood-sucking vixens in the Spanish masterpiece THE WEREWOLF VS THE VAMPIRE WOMEN (1971), then drive-in idol John Ashley turns into a murderous man-monster in the far-out Filipino freakfest BEAST OF THE YELLOW NIGHT (1971)! PLUS...live on stage...the deliciously demonic dance troupe THE DEVIL-ETTES! And...your TV horror host MISTER LOBO in person! With the creepy creations of CHUCK JARMAN on display and just added: the legendary SON OF GHOUL in person!
SWEET! Break out the stylish threads and mix me a cocktail, Pirate is SO there with his points on, his beer(s) poured, his pen fresh, his note-pad paper plates ready for note-taking!

And now, an open letter to Horror Host and Thrillville favorite, [info]mr_lobo:
Mr. Lobo,

Thursday night, October 19th 2006, you'll be once again making the trek down from Sacto to Oaktown for a live appearance at the East Bay's most badass B-movie revue, Thrillville. Boo-Yaa!

I would like to take a moment to point out that on previous visits to Thrillville you have entertained us with The Mr.Lobogames™ such as "Dracula vs. Frankenstein Thumb-wrestling" at Horror-Host-a-Palooza '05 and The Captain's Chair Challenge at the T-ville 9th Anniversary Bash.

The winner of both of those Mr. Lobogames™? Chad, husband of Jenny the General Mgr at the Parkway. Chad (now properly Capt. Chad after his victory in the Chair Challenge) is Thrillville's Champion Undefeated of the Mr. Lobogames™.

Presuming that there are Mr. Lobogames™ in store for our entertainment this coming Thursday night, it would (in this humble monkey's opinion) be proper for Capt. Chad, as Champion Undefeated of the Mr. Lobogames™ at Thrillvile, to defend his title against a challenger.

Sure, you could just pick any 2 beer-sipping yahoos out of the crowd, but since we do in fact have a Chamnpion Undefeated here in the (510), how much cooler would it be to have the title actually on the line?

Sincerely,

Pirate
Thrillvile Chronicler Ordinaire
So if you're free next Thursday night, come on down to Oaktown's glorious Parkyway Theater and get your Thrill on! Pizza! Beer! Horror Hosts! Devil-ettes! Whacked-out foreign horror flicks! LIVE THERAMIN!!!

You know you want to! Who's in? And keep checking this Thrill-channel for the write-up!

p.s. Don't park in the Kragen lot or they'll tow you. Seriously.

p.p.s Obey the Tiki Goddess, mere mortals! When the Thrillvile theme starts playing, do not hoot and holler like a buncha mooks, be cool and make with the snappity-snap. This is Thrillville, not some 49s tailgate party. And when it's trivia time, raise your fricken hands and do not call out lest the wrath and disdain of the Tiki Goddess rain down on you like.... like... disdainful wrath!

UPDATE: Didn't make it to Thrillville. Circumstances. Foo.

Looks like the monkey may not make it to Thrillville tonight. Lexi's really sick and I think I'm gonna stay home and play nursemaid.

Sorry about the lack for write-up this month for those of you who were counting on it. But my sweetie's really not feeling well and I'm gonna stay and take care of her.

Sky diving, mermaids (everybody loves a mermaid), biker gangs, Buster Keaton, Frankie and Annette a-shakin' and a-shimmying on the sands, and a titile track about indescriminate snoggin' on a southern California beach with a someone you probably just met. Tales From Thrillville: Mad Mexican Monster Mash!

  • May. 25th, 2006 at 4:56 PM
Thrillville Monkey
Hey there, thrill seekers! Pirate has FINALLY gotten his monkey-ass around to writing up his latest excursion to Thrillville. (I know, we're halfway to next month's. Bad monkey! Moving on...)

Dancin' dames, wrestlin' hotties, MONKEYS (both live and onscreen), and a dedicated, sleep-derived thrill seeker with a couple of pints of cerveza and a final exam the next morning attempting to take notes in the dark.

I live for this stuff!
Make with the clickety-click. Because it'll make you cool. It'll make you popular. And because all your friends are doing it. )

Calling all Thrill Seekers!

Thrillville Monkey
It's that time again! This Thursday night Oaktown's incredible Parkway Theater brings to you, live and in swingin' color...

THRILLVILLE, with your hosts & hostess, Will the Thrill and Monica, Tiki Goddess.

What? Some of you cats and kittens don't know what Thrillville is?
Thrillville is a city of B-movie dreams in a state of culture shock, where Time stands still and aesthetics supercede politics; where monsters, babes, hipsters and swingers mingle and mate over martinis and Mai Tais; where Style rules over Fashion, where Elvis is King, the Rat Pack rules, and Will the Thrill, a beatnik lounge lizard, is Mayor.
It is the most rocktacularly badass b-movie/sci-fi/psychotronic/film noir cabaret going.

This month's looking like it's going to be a REAL treat because we're in for Will's Mad Mexican Monster Mash. Live, on stage, the guerilla burlesque of Diamond Daggers! And for more monkey mania, the one and only Gorilla-X will be there! WOO-HOO, MONKEY-POWER!!!

And the movie?
[A] lurid South of the Border clas-sick NIGHT OF THE BLOODY APES (1969), with masked female wrestlers vs a rampaging rapist apeman and his evil mad scientist creator!
Oh baby, who's in? Just look for the horny, little goatboy with the points on his head and say hi.

Oh and for you first timers, when the theme-song starts to play, snap along with her Divine Tikiness, K?

Tales from Thrillville: 9th Anniversary Bash!

  • Apr. 16th, 2006 at 8:36 PM
Thrillville Monkey
Hey, cats & kittens! Last Thursday night was Thrillville's celebration of 9 YEARS worth of bringing weird-ass movies, awesome live performances, and an unalterably swank and smooth sense of style to Oaktown's very own Parkway Theater. There was live Theramin. There were live pretty ladies. There were robots. There was beer & pizza.

It was beautiful.

Make with the clickety-click, fellow thrillseeker... )

Protest & Thrillville this week in Oaktown

  • Mar. 6th, 2006 at 9:15 AM
Thrillville Monkey
Hey, hep-cats and -kittens! Couple of announcements.

Tuesday, 3/7/06 there's a protest at Oaktown City Hall to demand that the city hire the additional cops that Measure Y's parcel tax was supposed to pay for. Instead, we've had a decrease in the number of officers and I'm hearin' far too fucking many gunshots in the distance and the ghetto-bird overhead is a really annoying sound. 6pm, City Hall. Sign the petition, 7:45 is the City Council Meeting.

Thrusday 3/9/06, it's that time again, thrill-seekers. Get out your stylin' threads and snap your fingers along to the music, it's time for Thrillville!

This month, Will the Thrill and Monica, Tiki-Goddess play host to their Hipster Holocaust Blowout! First, the swank lounge-a-delic vocal stylin's of The Atomic Lounge Show w/ Gin & Johnny. It's the spirit of Vegas, right here in the East Bay. Can't you just picture the mushroom clouds for off to the horizon as you step out of the Casino, busted down to the felt? I knew you could.

The main feature this month is Panic in Year Zero (1962), wherein Frankie Avalon & Ray Milland try to survive post-nuclear apocalypse L.A. What's not to love?

Show starts at 9:15, but your Pirate is planning on getting there about an hour early 'cause Will always has something cool up on the screen during the lead up. $7 gets you in.

As always, the Parkway Theater's got beer, wine, and pizza to go with the comfy chairs and tables. Get there EARLY if you want a shot at getting one of the couches up front. Here's hoping you can come get your thrill on with Pirate. Gotta figure out what shirt I'm gonna wear.

As usual, I'll be wearing the points out in public to both events.

Thrillville is Thursday night! Who's in?

  • Feb. 8th, 2006 at 9:22 AM
Goatboy is here to please you...
It's that time again, thrillseekers! Thursday night, 9:15pm, it's time for another edition of Thrillville at the glorious Parkway Theater in Oaktown.

It's February, so this month Will the Thrill and Monica, Tiki Goddess are offering up their their SEXY SCI-FI SPY VALENTINE'S SHOW. First up, the deliciously sultry burlesque of Hot Pink Feathers, live on stage!

And after the jigglin' hotties, we get Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine (1965) starring Vincent Price and Frankie Avalon. What's it about? Why are you asking silly questions where there's beer and pizza and comfy couches and dancing hotties live on stage?

What's that? You've never been to Thrillville? Never even been to the Parkway? You wanna know what it's like? Well, you can take a gander at my write ups for Will's Horror-Host-a-Palooza '05 and the Sexy Swords & Sorcery Spectacular.

Get there early because it tends to sell out and Will's always showing something cool on the big screen in the hour leading up. [info]strawberrytabby is most likely in. [info]bff2112, you know you want to. Who else is in?

Just look for the goatboy with the points on his head. ;-)

Tales from Thrillville: The "Horror-Host-a-Palooza '05" Write Up! (at long last)

  • Jan. 18th, 2006 at 9:46 PM
Thrillville Monkey
Last October's Thrillville was the much anticipated Horror-Host-a-Palooza. Ahh, the horror hosts, purveyors of late night TV showing scary movies and being the MC during commercial breaks. People from Elvira (who ripped off Vampira's schtick) to Joe Bob Briggs. This was a celebration of these ultimate fans/purveyors of the shocking and scary, put on by the swingin'-est cats in the East Bay, Will the Thrill and the lovely Monica, Tiki Goddess in the best Pizza-n-Beer servin', couch-&-comfy-chair-havin' movie theater in Oaktown, The Parkway.

I went.
I got massively plowed.
I had a massively rocktacular time.
I took notes.
I got driven home.
I got laid off the next day.

And that kinda put the kibosh on my immediately doing the write up. Then winter depression kicked the aprtment into a bit of a tailspin and the notes, taken dutifully on paper plates, languished.

So it's a couple of months later, the depression is lifting, I've been doing some independent contract work, time to FINALLY do the HHaP05 entry. Double feature with Dracula vs. Frankenstein and Astro Zombies. FUN!

Did I mention the part about getting massively plowed? I couldn't do a write up now to save my life. But I did save the paper plates, along with some of the swag this Pirate scored. So I've decided to just scan the plates in and transcribe what i can read off them [with additional commentary where appropriate].

This is a long one, but I think it's gonna be a hellava ride! Lemme get my HST boots on for this... )

Can't touch this!
Sweet taste of chocolate! It's Thrillville night here in Oaktownbootyville and tonight Will and Monica are serving up a huge slice of Pirate's favorite movie FX GOD, Ray Harryhausen:
It's THRILLVILLE'S SEXY SWORD 'N' SORCERY SHOW!
The Cyclops, the Swashbuckling Skeleton, the Roc, the Dragon, the Snake Woman, the Evil Warlock and the teeny tiny Genie all come to magical life in Ray Harryhausen's colorful fantasy classic THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (1958) plus the sword-swirling sorcery of the Bay Area's bodacious belly-dancing troupe CLANDESTINE live on stage!
Lexi is still dying of Bubonic Whooping SARS and has taken the liquid green bus to the land of Morpheus where she's been for about 72 hours so the monkey is flying solo tonight. [[info]lexica510: "And Oakland quails in fear..."]

R.H is THE DEAN when it comes to stop-motion animation. Sure, it looks cheesey and archeo-tek, but it's 48 frickin' years old! There's just something so cool about what he could accomplish generations before people like [info]tongodeon could amaze us by pushing pixels around.

Beer. Pizza. Couches. Buckles being swashed. Dragons. LIVE BELLY DANCERS! All hosted by Will the Thrill (Coolest cat in the 510) and his lovely wife Monica, Tiki-Goddess.

I love Oaktownbootyville!

Thrillville tonight!

Thrillville Monkey
Tonight mi amigo Tiburon & I are going to Horror Host Palooza '05 at Oaktown's very own Parkway Theater. They're showing Dracula vs. Frankenstein and Astro Zombies. Kick ass!

Best things about going to Thrillville is:
-The Parkway serves beer & pizza (albeit mediocre pizza)
-Tiburon is driving

Of course, we do live within staggering distance of the PW, but I don't think they've caught those guys who've been committing the odd armed robbery in the neighborhood, though I haven't heard of any recent incidents. Still, it's nice to have a DD.

[info]lexica510 is going to enjoy a nice peaceful night at home with the cats.
