GET OFF MY LAWN YOU DAMN KIDS!
The last photo I posted & a serendipitous post by [info]upstart_crow had me googling up Judy Kuhn performing "Nobody's Side" from the musical Chess

That song was the soundtrack to my (secret) cynical, alienated 80s teen. The public face was the shaggy-headed beach-bum spouting W.A.S.P. lyrics under his breath. But the inner Nick (before I became "Pirate") would have loved to have had something to belong to. But that wasn't much in the offing, so I opted for spikes on my jacket and in my attitude.

I love the song because it was big in my circle of of Rocky Horror/Musical Theater summercamp circle, the ones in the photo. Because for several weeks during the summer, I was a freak among freaks. I had a pack to run with.

Plus, none of the girls at school would have anything to do with me.

The rest of the year, at best I had a team to join. But as much as summers singing and dancing (and organizing "Toga Day" and skipping assembly) were a thrill, the rest of the year I spent in Brooklyn Prep School hell.

Finally got to see Judy Kuhn sing live on Broadway the summer after I started college. A summer w/out my theater freak posse.

And right now, I can embrace the beautiful music, brilliant syncopation, and Judy Kuhn's exquisite delivery without identifying with the message.

Nice place to be. And nice to be back in touch with my old pack.

Gonna buzz all night long!
An old buddy of mine facebooked this Halloween-in-the-80s moment. Evidently I went as "Pantsless Headband-guy" that year. Take that, Sandler!

Don't worry, they're all musical theater types. They weren't shocked.

GET OFF MY LAWN YOU DAMN KIDS!
The one and only song I've really ever heard from the bad Kix is Cold Shower. Saw the video back in the 80s, and it just RAWKED! Plus, the band walks that fine line between rocker and excessively glam.

Yes, the singer has skintight pants and a sparkly jacket, but he's got a hellava set of pipes and plays the harp, so it balances out. The rest of the band are basically in black & denim, minimal fringe and it doesn't get in the way.

And it's an awesome, bass-heavy riff. Pirate is all about guitar riffs. I respect hip-hop. I respect rhythm-based music. But this monkey is a rocker at heart.

Never heard another song by Kix. Will probably search up some more of their stuff.

But mebbe not. I love this song so much, mebbe i keep it as a lone memory.

So...

Name me a song that you've liked for a long time that's the only song you know by that band. Embedded videos encouraged. :D
